Bio Microneedling: The Newest Skincare Treatment Getting Real Results (Without Any Needles)

Every year I go to the ICES skincare show looking for the same thing: not what is trending, but what is actually missing from what I can offer my clients. Last year it was exosomes, a technology that was at every single booth and that I still use and believe in. Here's last year's video.

This year the treatment that stopped me completely was something I had never heard of before.

It is called Bio Microneedling. I went to the booth, sat through the workshop, had it done on my own face, and I have been talking about it ever since. Here is the full breakdown.

What Bio Microneedling Actually Is

Traditional microneedling uses fine stainless steel needles in a device to create tiny perforations in the skin. Those micro-channels allow product to penetrate deeper and trigger the skin's wound response, which stimulates collagen and elastin production.

The problem is that a wound response also triggers inflammation. And for anyone dealing with pigmentation, acne, or rosacea, inflammation is exactly what we are trying to avoid. We end up in a cycle: wound the skin to stimulate it, create inflammation in the process, which worsens pigmentation and acne.

Bio Microneedling takes a completely different approach. There are no needles. There is no device. Instead, it uses something called spicules -- microscopic structures derived from a sponge-like silica material that are so small you cannot see them with the naked eye, but you can absolutely feel them on the skin.

How Spicules Work

The spicules come in a powder form that is mixed with a liquid serum and applied to the skin using a small applicator. Once on the skin, the spicules do something that genuinely surprised me: they swim through the skin's surface, bypassing the oil barrier and going into the pores, and create micro-channels that stimulate the upper layers of the skin to begin the renewal process.

Here is what made me stop in my tracks at that booth. Traditional microneedling devices create somewhere between 600,000 and 700,000 micro-channels. Because spicules are so microscopic, they create between 3 million and 7 million channels. That difference in channel density is part of why the results happen so much faster.

And because the spicules are stimulating the skin without creating a wound response, the inflammation cycle that traditional microneedling can trigger does not happen. After the treatment is complete, a special serum is applied that actually signals the skin not to overproduce melanin -- calming any tendency toward hyperpigmentation before it can start.

What It Feels Like

I want to be honest about this because it matters for setting expectations.

You feel the spicules. From the moment they are applied through approximately day three, your face feels prickly -- similar to touching a cactus and having the tiny spines still in your skin, except you cannot see anything. By day two it feels like a mild sunburn. By day three the spicules are largely gone because your skin has pushed them out as new cells come to the surface.

It is not painful. It is not intolerable. But it is not nothing either. Your pain tolerance and sensitivity to prickly sensation will determine how comfortable the process feels for you.

The Results I Saw

I had the Revitalizing treatment done at the show and could see a visible difference the very next morning. By day two the texture of my skin had smoothed noticeably. The pores around my chin looked smaller. A brown spot I have been treating for years looked lighter. The slight jowl area I have been working on looked lifted and firmer.

I was not wearing makeup for three days after the treatment -- which for me, someone who is very self-conscious about my acne scarring and pigmentation, is significant. But I genuinely did not feel like I needed it. My skin looked better bare than it usually does.

Who Can Have This Treatment

This is where Bio Microneedling is genuinely different from anything I have offered before. At the show I saw it used on inflamed rosacea, active acne vulgaris, and even someone with lupus. Traditional microneedling cannot touch those skin conditions. Bio Microneedling can -- because it is not creating a wound response.

There are four formulations, each designed for a different skin profile:

Nourishing Hydrating

For dry skin, compromised barrier, rosacea, or very sensitive skin. The spicules in this formulation are finer and less dense, making it gentle enough for the most reactive skin types.

Anti-Aging

Also uses finer, less dense spicules. Designed for mature skin focused on firming, lifting, and collagen support. These two formulations can be massaged into the skin rather than patted.

Resurfacing

Larger spicules, fewer of them. For oily, combination, and acne-prone skin. This is the formulation designed to clear congestion and address active breakouts.

Revitalizing

The most spicules, the finest size. For all skin types. This is what I had done and what I start everyone with -- if you can handle the revitalizing formulation, you can handle any of the others. It is the most comprehensive option for overall skin renewal.

The Aftercare Protocol

For the first seven days after treatment, your skin is actively working through the renewal process. What that means for aftercare:

No makeup for at least the first three days. Your skin has millions of open micro-channels and you do not want to introduce anything that does not belong there.

Use only what your esthetician provides or recommends. Clean, simple products only. For washing, filtered or bottled water is preferred.

Wear mineral sunscreen if you go outside. Only clean mineral sunscreen -- nothing with chemical filters while your skin is open.

Avoid the beach, pool, or prolonged sun exposure. You can go about your normal life, but protect your skin.

If you have Botox scheduled, wait at least two weeks before doing Bio Microneedling. For fillers, wait a month.

After day seven, your skin's cellular renewal cycle is complete. You can return to your normal routine, layer in other treatments, or come back for another Bio Microneedling session.
