Holiday Travel Beauty Essentials: What We Pack for Skin, Hair + Makeup On the Go

With the holidays here, travel plans kick in fast — and so does the question: What beauty products are we actually bringing?

Suitcases get tight, TSA has rules, and hotel products… well, they’re hit or miss.

Today on the Beauty Lab Podcast, we’re walking through the exact skincare, haircare, and makeup items we pack so we can travel light and still feel like ourselves.

Let’s dive in.

Our Skincare Travel Routine: Simple, Compact, TSA-Friendly

Skincare is always our starting point. If our skin feels good, the whole trip feels easier.

We stick to our essentials:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner or mist
  • Serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Facial oil
  • Lip balm

Why Travel Bags With Sections Help

We love using bags with compartments so we can keep everything sorted:

  • Skincare in one spot
  • Makeup in another
  • Body items all together

If a line offers a travel-size kit, that’s even better — TSA-friendly and already pre-packed.

Staying Hydrated on Planes + During Winter Travel

Plane air + cold weather = dry everything.
So we always bring:

  • A strong lip balm
  • A hydrating facial oil

Both go in our carry-on so they never get lost with checked luggage.

TSA Reminder

Liquids must be under 3.4–3.5 oz to stay in your carry-on.

Anything larger gets checked — or tossed.

Body Care: Bring Your Own (Trust Us)

Hotel body wash and bar soap are rarely moisturizing.

So we pack:

  • A good body wash
  • A travel-size body lotion

If we only have full sizes, we refill smaller containers or jars.

Everything fits in one compact body care bag.

Haircare: Don’t Let Hotel Products Ruin Your Style

Our hair never behaves when we rely on hotel shampoo or conditioner, even if the brand looks “nice.”

Different hair types need different formulas — so we bring our own.

We pack:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Styling cream
  • Hair oil
  • Hairspray

Our Favorite Travel Hack: The “Mix in a Jar”

To save space, we combine products (this works for Velia Beauty Co.’s products - you must test for others):

  1. Add leave-in conditioner into a small screw-top jar
  2. Mix in styling cream
  3. Add a drop of hair oil

Now we have one compact styling mix for multiple days.

Important:
Test the combo in your hand before mixing.
If it clumps → don’t mix it.

Hairspray Travel Warning

We always:

  • Keep the lid on
  • Double-bag it in zip-top bags

Hairspray explosions in luggage haunt us.

Makeup: A Travel Glam Bag That Still Does Everything

We streamline our makeup bag so we’re not dragging around a full setup.

Here’s what we bring:

  • Tinted foundation or cushion compact
  • Concealer
  • One or two multi-use sticks
  • Mascara
  • Liner
  • Setting spray
  • Small powder

Why We Love Cushion Compacts + Multi-Use Sticks

They’re:

  • Spill-proof
  • Compact
  • Easy for touch-ups
  • Great for minimal travel glam

Palettes Keep It Simple

We bring:

  • One neutral palette, or
  • A magnetic palette we build ourselves

Keeps everything neat and easy to access.

Hair Tools, Sleep Helpers + Must-Know Packing Tips

We don’t bring every tool we own — just the essentials.

Most of the time, we skip the blow dryer and use the hotel's one.

But we DO pack:

  • A curling iron or flat iron
  • Round brush
  • Humidity-resistant shower cap
  • Satin scrunchie
  • Bobby pins
  • One alligator clip or styling clip

Satin = Smoother Hair + Fewer Sleep Lines

We pack:

  • A satin bonnet, or
  • A satin pillowcase

It helps:

  • Reduce frizz
  • Protect styles
  • Prevent face creases

Dry Shampoo Rule

Great for one use.

Not great for five days straight.

The Family Suitcase Hack

If we’re traveling with family or friends and want to bring full-size bottles, we use this strategy:

  • Put ALL full-size haircare, skincare, and body products in one shared checked suitcase
  • Everyone else sticks to carry-ons

One bag fee instead of four — done.

If these tips help make your holiday travel easier, we love that.

Until next time, keep experimenting with your beauty routine.
