5 Beauty Questions You’ve Been Dying to Ask—Answered!

Every week, we get amazing questions from our listeners—and today, we’re answering five of the most popular ones! From hair color mysteries to skincare confusion, this post is packed with helpful tips you’ll want to bookmark. Let’s jump right into it.

What’s the Deal with Purple, Blue, and Green Shampoo?

If you’ve ever stood in the shampoo aisle staring at a wall of color-depositing options, you’re not alone. Here’s what each one does:

  • Purple shampoo neutralizes yellow tones. It’s your go-to if your platinum or white-blonde hair starts looking brassy.
  • Blue shampoo targets orange tones—great for golden blondes or honey-colored highlights.
  • Green shampoo cancels red tones, especially useful for brunettes with unwanted warmth.

💡 Pro tip: Always wash with your regular shampoo first, then apply your purple/blue/green formula as a second step. These color shampoos aren’t meant to clean—they’re meant to tone!

Bonus: If your hair has multiple tones (like both blonde and caramel), always treat the lightest color first. Otherwise, your beautiful highlights might end up with an unwanted tint.

How Often Should You Really Clean Your Brushes?

Let’s talk hygiene. Your tools can make or break your glow-up—literally. Here’s the lowdown:

Makeup Brushes:

  • Synthetic (used with cream or liquid): Clean them weekly (or daily if you’re acne-prone).

  • Natural hair (used with powders): Clean 2x a week.

  • Use a gentle cleanser like baby shampoo or a pro cleaner like Cinema Secrets. Don’t forget to disinfect with a quick-dry spray for in-between refreshes!

Hair Brushes:

Hair products, oil, and buildup cling to your brushes—especially round brushes used for blowouts. Clean them every
2 weeks if you use a lot of product, or once a month if you’re more low-maintenance.

Remove all the hair after each use, then wash with warm water and dish soap or shampoo. Scrub the bristles until they look fresh and feel squeaky clean.

Not Sure What Hair Color Fits You? Here’s Why It’s Complicated

Choosing the right hair color isn’t just about picking a swatch you love—it’s about knowing what flatters your unique skin tone, eye color, and undertones.

Generally:

  • Gold jewelry lovers tend to suit warm tones.
  • Silver jewelry wearers often look best in cool tones.

But here’s the thing: You might rock a cool-toned blonde and still need a warm brunette to look your best. It’s all about balance. That’s why we suggest working with a stylist trained in color analysis (psst—Velia offers virtual consults!  Simply email Velia HERE OR if you're in the Bay Area or visiting, you can schedule a hair appointment here.)

Hair color is personal and nuanced, and the right color can completely transform your look and confidence.

How to Even Out Your Skin Tone (Without Makeup)

Uneven skin tone is one of the most common concerns—and usually comes down to pigmentation. Here’s a routine we love for fading discoloration and boosting glow:

Exfoliate 2–3x a week  se a gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant to slough off dead skin and lighten dark spots over time.

Add a Targeted Serum:

  • Niacinamide reduces redness
  • Vitamin C fades spots and brightens
  • Azelaic acid helps with post-acne marks

There are two products we love!  We'll share our favorite seriums (just email me and I'll get you 5% off!)

SPF Every Day (Yes, Even Cloudy Ones).  Broad spectrum sunscreen protects against UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). Look for SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors.

Consistency is key. Stick with this routine for 4–8 weeks and you’ll see real results.

Is Vitamin C Better as a Serum or Supplement?

Trick question—it’s not either/or. You need both!

Topical Vitamin C:

Brightens, boosts collagen, fades dark spots, and protects against free radicals. If you want quick results, look for L-ascorbic acid. If you have sensitive skin, go for Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP)—it’s gentler but still effective. We'll share our favorite seriums (just email me and I'll get you 5% off!)

Oral Vitamin C:

Supports overall wellness, kickstarts collagen production from within, and protects your body from oxidative stress (which speeds up aging). Pair it with Vitamin E for extra skin hydration and antioxidant power.  We'll share our favorite Vitamin C Supplement (just email me and I'll get you 5% off!)

So yes, slather it and swallow it.
